Cage covers are usefull for a variety of reasons. We will discuss two reasons below.
Parrots require between 10-12 hours of sleep per night. Than DOES NOT include time during the day that the parrot may sleep. This means that your parrot should be be sleeping from sunset to sunrise. If your bird lives in a room where you have the TV on between sunset and sunrise, or, if your bird is in an area that gets alot of traffic, then we highly recommend that you cover your bird. Movement is more distracting than noise, so, if the bird is covered, it can relax and sleep. If your bird is in a dark, quiet room, a cover is not essential, but can still be used.
A second reason for a cover is to use it for a "time out." That is, if you bird is misbehaving by screaming, then you can try to condition him to stop screaming by covering the cage. This action, however, overly simplifies the dynamics behind the root cause of screaming, so you should also do more reading to determine why your bird is screaming.
