Hand-fed Parakeets and English Budgies are adorable little birds with BIG personalities. Hand-fed Budgies (Budgie is another way of saying Parakeet, it is from the word Budgerigar, their real name) are best for pets, though parent-raised budgies can be tamed with time and patience. Parakeets are social birds by nature and do best in pairs or groups. They are affectionate, playful, and intelligent - sometimes to the point of (almost) endearing mischief. Misbehavior and destruction can be stopped by keeping their cage stocked with toys to entertain them.
To be well socialized, a Parakeet will require about an hour of your attention each day. They enjoy being held and spoken to, and some even like having their heads rubbed. If at all possible, they should be out of the cage for more than this single hour of interaction. Parakeets love to fly which means that a wide cage is always better than a tall one, and as always - the bigger the better.
Physical Description: Parakeets (or Budgies) come in a variety of colors and patterns. The yellow and green variety is the most common, but they also come in blues, whites, and purples. Parakeets are known for having a “necklace” of black spots under their cheeks and chin, and typically have faint striping on the back of the head and neck. Their backs and wings are mottled with spots and splotches of color, which will vary depending on the mutation.
Average Lifespan: 10 – 20 years
Sexing: You can sex an adult Parakeet by looking at its cere (nose). Females will have a dull white or pink cere, while males are blue or violet. Males have the ability to speak; females do not (but they are both make great companions). Baby Budgies will all look like females until they are roughly 1 year old. Until this time, sexing is purely a guessing game.
Origin: Australia
Train ability: Hand-fed budgies make excellent pets, and parent-raised Budgies can also be tamed, but it is more difficult to tame a parent-raised budgie. We recommend that they be kept singly, unless you will be away from home for a large portion of the day. If this is the case, it is best to get a Budgie buddy for your Parakeet. Budgies make excellent pets if they are showered with love and affection. They can be trained to fly to you on command, and some males can even learn to talk. They make excellent pets for kids, and we find that they are generally overlooked and underestimated as a pet.
Loudness: Parakeets are very quiet birds and make a pleasant chirping noise throughout the day. They are quite vocal and seem to speak their mind very well. You will come to understand your Budgie’s vocalizations. They have a different noise for when they are happy, angry, or excited, etc. They make great apartment birds.
