Red-Vented Cockatoo Parrot
Physical Description: Red-vented Cockatoos are roughly the same size and shape as the Goffin’s Cockatoo. They are entirely white or faint peach-colored, except for the area around their vent which is bright red and yellow. Just like the Goffin’s Cockatoo, they have a bare patch around the eyes, and a tiny little crest, resembling a shark’s fin, that stands up when they are surprised or excited.
Average Lifespan: 20 – 30 years
Sexing: The sexes differ only in eye color, though all juvenile birds will appear to be female. After they have reached maturity (typically around 5 years of age) the females will retain a brown iris, while the males will turn almost black. The darker the iris, the more likely it is to be male.
Origin: Philippines Trainability: Domestic hand-fed babies make excellent pet birds for dedicated caregivers. Arguably, these parrots are among the most affectionate animals on the planet! This is wonderful at first, but they quickly become like needy two year olds, craving constant attention and companionship. Although the Red-vented Cockatoo can be slightly more independent than other Cockatoos, they still need a lot of attention. If you are unable to devote at least 4 hours of quality time to your parrot each day, then a Cockatoo is not for you. They are extremely playful and acrobatic. Anything and everything is a toy to them – especially if you don’t want them to have it. For this reason, we recommend a large variety of toys and plenty of supervision during play time. They can learn to speak, but are often difficult to understand. Red-vented Cockatoos will typically develop a small vocabulary of 5 or 6 of their favorite words and phrases.
Loudness: Cockatoos are among the loudest of the parrot species, so if you’re sensitive to noise we would suggest looking into other types of parrots. While the Red-vented Cockatoo are not as loud as some of the larger Cockatoos, they are still not apartment pets.
Pricing: Red-vented Cockatoos are extremely rare, and are classified as highly endangered. The breeding success rate of this species has been very low. For this reason, they are expensive parrots.
